ABOUT THE COMPOSITIONS
Man or Muffin
Blind Opposite- This tune is inspired by the Byzantine Empire. When Byzas, a Greek citizen, consulted the oracle of Apollo at Delphi about where he should found a new colony (Greece being over populated, and all that) the oracle simply whispered 'opposite the blind' or it may have been 'blind opposite' (if you are prone to disambiguation). Byzas sailed north to the opposite side of the Bosporus Strait, where he found what the oracle described. The Byzantium settlement grew to become the Byzantine Empire. The Empire protected Western Europe's legacy until barbarism waned which allowed Europeans to endeavor the Renaissance. Thank you Byzas.
I wrote this tune the day after The
Muffins called it quits.
I had composed about 14 songs for this CD, however, I had limited
myself to structures that fit into the Big Band genre. I let go of that
constrict for this song and created a linear composition that
encompassed every aspect of the idea of an aftermath and rebuilding
that I could imagine. It turned out to be a very positive song for me
full of sweet memories and hope.
Nymph- This one is for my darling bride.
Sometimes when I'm
working in my studio I'll look out the window to watch my wife Susan
working in her plantings. She is tireless when in her gardens and I'm
reminded of the connection she has forged with the creatures that share
her space. The hummingbirds are ever vigilant to remind her of the need
to refill the feeders, and at the end of their season they find her and
ultra sonic tweet their goodbye. As if to say 'good bye Nectar Nymph of
the mountain, thanks for the sweet water, see you next year'.
Distraction from Pain- Once, while on a family walk, I pointed out a patch of stinging nettles to my children and warned them not to venture into such places with out adequate protection. 'Never walk the nettles in shorts' I say to them. No sooner have I finished sharing my sage advise then my youngest son Justin runs straight through the patch of nettles (in shorts). Legs ablaze in peak season nettles sting he keeps his sprint going down the road towards home. I remember thinking to my self that his full tilt sprint was a good 'Distraction from Pain'.
Busy Hands- Back in the day The Muffins spent so much time rehearsing that I got to a point where I could be playing the music and be actively thinking of other things. It was a new experience for me and was the doorway to a new experience of musical play. Some call it muscle memory, but I didn't like that as a composition title so I settled for 'Busy Hands'.
Another Lost Tomorrow- This song emerged as a reaction to the 2016 Presidential Election. The campaign leading up to the election and the 1st 100 days left me feeling that our republic was divided against itself. I knew that I was experiencing a short term view and that with time people of conscience would mobilize. The cruelty that many of my fellows beings embraced had created a state of affairs unacceptable, and a serious lack of decency in our leadership pointed to an urgent need to reset the course we have taken.
2319- Nearly 16 years ago the Scott Family purchased a new DVD called Monsters Inc. The emergency code for an infiltration of an item from our world into the monsters domain was '2319'. It was young daughter Ena that noticed the code was our home address. There was a Jump Beat bass progression that played in the DVD main menu that I couldn't get out of my head. As a cathartic I changed it up a bit and created the very first keeper composition for this Big Band project.
Nothing You Can Do- My tribute to fatalism... by the way, there has never been worse advice. There is always something you can do.
Drunken Pumpkin- There was a recipe we tried out that had pumpkin and rum as its base flavors and hoo-boy did it turn out poorly. Several weeks later when we tried another recipe from the same source our daughter Ena had said noooooo... not another Drunken Pumpkin recipe! I had responded 'Drunken Pumpkin, Oh yeah, that's gonna be a song title'.
The Deep- Inspired by a water color painting by Walter Slaughter an excellent artist who's work I carried in my Gallery years ago. Walter has since passed away but I have a print of his work 'October Rain' as well as the original of 'The Deep' to remember his life's work.
Little Fish Hooks- My eldest sister Kathy had used the expression 'Egads, and little fish hooks' when I was just a child, and I have never forgotten the term. (I am aware of the variant 'Ye Gods and Little Fishes' which I don't find as memorable.) The colorful term seems appropriate for use to express consternation of various degrees, and needs no four letter booster words to get your point across. So there you have it. (My father once used the term 'Good God Miss Agnes' as a colorful retort, but that is all together another story.)
Sophie's Adventure- Sophie Allen isn't my biological daughter, but she is every bit my daughter on the level of Family. Sophie is a very adventuresome soul, and brings the family together in ways that enrich all of our lives. This is your song Sophie.
